Throughout this process I have pondered which title I fall under, a designer or an artist? I concluded that I, am in fact, both. I have come to realize that conceptual design is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating aspects in the entire process of creating - from it’s initial start to the day in which the piece is presented -This particular piece has made me obsessively aware of my surroundings, not just when I am creating, but when I am rummaging through my daily life. I have become oddly calm, a bit more patient & extremely aware of where I am relative to what is in my immediate environment. My thoughts are constantly recycling with, why am I here, what is my relationship with these objects that are presented around me - which usually drifts my thoughts into a deeper ponder of the things, people, sounds, plants, and smells that my life was meant to experience. This project that I am closing a chapter on, was meant to reflect the environment that the benches are going to be installed in. I conceptualized them to be complimenting the immediate environment while not forgetting about everything that is bigger than the relatively microscopic life in the macroscopic view of the world. Everything around us was created for a reason, placed in their environment and are expected to join together to function as a unified humanity. The scope of my thoughts are much larger than these tables, but in the process of attempting to understand and conceptualize the “bigger” picture, my thoughts always revert back to the simplicity of it all: there is the micro and there is the macro. Everything stems from those two basic concepts. This all being the inspiration and motivation for these tables and the designs that are delicately touching the wood surface.The combanation of design and installation for these tables have taken over 3 months to complete.

My weekend consisted of locking myself in my apartment and finishing this recreation of a graffiti photog that I took while in Italy this summer. I used paper for the background foundation and digital illustration for absolutely EVERYTHING else.  As simple as the original graffiti might have been on this wall in Venice, it was not that case re-creating it with digital design methods. I saw day light probably 2 times in the past 48 hours, some would say that it obsessive art-making, I say where did my weekend go? The time pasted in a blink (literally) I have this to thank and appreciate now.Lets just hope for the sake of my professor that my critique goes well, it is not very often that I will hold up to not see the public for a few days straight.

Artist Statement/Bio

I am an aspiring artist, a thinker, an observer, a designer, a photographer, a dreamer, a student, a vegetarian, a sister, a friend, and a daughter. This short list is taken from a much longer list to introduce, in brief, what makes me Who I Am. I, hopefully, will be so lucky as to achieve, through the pure nature of perception, my place in this over weighted society of identities and materialism.
Artist and former mentor, CJ Hurley, once said, “Artwork should reflect ones original idea of a gesamtkunstwerk.” I take this with me today as my motivation and inspiration for not only the artwork that I produce, but how I analyze the world in which I observe and take part in everyday. The word, gesamtkunstwerk [guh۔zahmt۔koonst۔verk], comes from the German language that holds meaning as a complete work of art. As I apply this to my work it means that, with each piece I create it will accumulate and hold meaning, personality and originality of Who I Am. I am constantly being intrigued by what I am exposed to in the environment around me, I then use my perceptions as inspiration for my artwork. When I create a piece of art it means that I have produced something visually enticing that has come from my inner being and is expressed through a source of medium. My work is my voice, it speaks from my soul and displays my thoughts. I don’t always know what my exact idea is, or what the final product will look like, but that is part of why art has encapsulated me.
I analyze everything around me, whether I immediately recognize it or not. I can’t help but wonder what our society would be without need and desire. That alone is reason enough for me to want to understand what and who I am, ultimately separating myself from society stereotypes. I am disturbed with the idea of being compared with, or put in one of the categories society has been made to define the people we are. I believe everyone possesses their own unique soul; however, there are these unfortunate stereotypes that are now engrained in the minds of popular society. My attempt to find identity and reason is through my art.
My aesthetic is motivated and inspired by natural beauty, simplicity and the odd/unique. I express natural beauty through the lens of my Nikon D40 camera. My eye is attracted to the unexpected that a passerby might neglect to notice, or the potential shot that just needs a few minutes to become the perfect angle or light. I find something so calming and peaceful with the act of photography and having the ability to encapsulate a moment that will be unique to only that time of day, that source of light and that angle.
Photography fills part of my creative urges, but I am also an artist who experiences zen in the act of creating digital art or graphic designs. With these, I revert to simplicity and visual appeal. I incorporate inspiration and original thought with attention to detail. Also, for me, drawing invokes similar pleasure as creating digital art; it generates the same kind of mood and relaxation that graphic design does. It does not allow my mind to rest as I am constantly being rejuvenated with inspiration and motivation in the act of creating. Most of the art I create and why I create it is hard to put into words; it speaks its finest when it can be shown through the finished product. Creating is a way that I find my center; it is what I can always rely on in this ever inconsistent world.
So much of my inspiration comes from observing and studying past and present artists. I believe that educating oneself is just as valuable and important as creating original work.
I yearn to continue learning and growing as an artist as I venture into the world. As a young artist, I relish in the opportunity to experiment and develop in pursuit of something that I actually believe in. Art aids the identity of Who I Am, speaks the voice that I can not and inflicts peace and harmony into my soul.
